Religious STUDIES

You are here:

The Team and Facilities:

There is a dedicated team of 2 RS specialists. We are a small but diverse, dedicated and passionate team. Lessons and classrooms are well-resourced and have a wide variety of religious and philosophical books that students of all ages can access.

KEY STAGE 3

At the start of secondary school, we believe it is really important for students to reflect on their own beliefs and learn about the beliefs of their new classmates. Throughout the course in Years 7,8 and 9 we encourage students to share and explore their own faith. We cover all the major world faiths with a particular focus on Christianity and Islam. Students really enjoy the lessons and often leave the classroom debating the issues introduced in class.

We follow a curriculum designed to be both academically rigorous and challenging, dealing with some classical theology, but also one that addresses the current issues with religion. Throughout the course we are keen to promote a celebration of difference in an environment where all students, regardless of faith (or lack of), gender, ethnicity and ability feel safe, valued and able to contribute.

KEY STAGE 4

All students will follow a non-examined core RS course. This is one lesson a week and will continue to develop the themes introduced at Years 7,8 and 9 such as examining the philosophical arguments for the existence of God and studying the ethical issues surrounding torture.

RS is also a GCSE option and, on this course, students will study a wide range of issues from abortion to war in 2 different religions. An in-depth study of Christianity and Islam not only offers a coherent story of the foundations of monotheism, but that knowledge of each religion will develop understanding of the other faiths being studied.

KEY STAGE 5

At key stage 5 students can choose to study Philosophy and Ethics, which includes an in-depth study of Christianity. Students are required to study those aspects of the religious beliefs, teachings, values and practices of Christianity and the different ways in which these are expressed in the lives of individuals, communities and societies.

Students find this course extremely challenging but highly rewarding. We read a lot, and we write a lot of essays. We make no apologies for this and with the expert help of our teachers we have helped our students make significant progress in their writing. This is very helpful for our students most of whom go on to university.
