The students worked amazingly well throughout the programme and at Graduation. In particular, one of the students delivered an outstanding keynote speech at the graduation ceremony and two students scored the highest grade, achieving a First for their thesis.

This was an opportunity for the students to ask questions about vocations and the challenges that come within working in healthcare. The students were then set a planning task to re-design a leisure site, to include adding activities to improver revenue streams. There followed a Health and Wellbeing Workshop in which students were given the opportunity to try out a range of health check equipment which included  blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature. 

]]> Tue, 10 Mar 2026 15:03:45 GMT https://www.wexhamschool.co.uk/news/?pid=3&nid=1&storyid=503 <![CDATA[ YEAR 9 GIRLS - GE HEALTHCARE VISIT ]]> https://www.wexhamschool.co.uk/news/?pid=3&nid=1&storyid=502 On Tuesday 24th February, our year 9 girls had the opportunity to visit GE Healthcare in Buckinghamshire. This was a STEAM enrichment trip, in which the girls took part in a team challenge focused on supporting “Margaret”, a patient living with dementia. They explored the impact of dementia on both Margaret and her family, before writing and performing short scripts to present their ideas. One standout solution was the design of a mobile app to support Margaret with medication reminders, memory prompts, and family communication features. The activity encouraged empathy, creativity and problem-solving. They were also given a tour of the site, where they were able to see advanced medical equipment including ultrasound machines, infant incubators, and highly precise digital weighing scales. This gave them great insight into how science and technology are applied in healthcare. The girls participated enthusiastically throughout the day. This was a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world STEAM careers.

During form time, students watched webinars delivered by London Gatwick Apprenticeships and “From Learning to Earning – The Apprenticeship Advantage.” They also completed apprenticeship quizzes and explored real-life apprentice experiences to gain a clearer understanding of how apprenticeships work and what they involve. Students had the opportunity to attend additional live employer webinars across sectors including construction, engineering, rail, energy and pharmaceuticals, giving them insight into industry-specific pathways. We were also pleased to welcome an external speaker, a recent degree apprentice from RealAtkins, who shared his journey and answered students’ questions on project management and apprenticeships. Engagement was excellent throughout. In a practical workshop, students practiced applying for apprenticeships, took part in mock interviews using the STAR technique, and developed networking skills. Students stepped outside their comfort zones and responded positively to the challenge.

(Year 12) described the experience as “extremely helpful and insightful,” particularly in developing her confidence and networking skills.

The talk included financial literacy and careers and was followed by a Q & A session. The talk was highly engaging and well received by all students.

They were able to create their own pitch and film ideas in the bespoke XR studio. They also met with members of the Sky Team, who were happy to give them a first-hand view of careers in both film and the creative arts. They used cutting-edge technology to create their own digital content and take on real life media roles, working with a team of experts to create a cameo film!

Abi brought in her own life experience, providing anecdotes & insights into her career path in this highly competitive sector. She also explored the myriad of non-medical opportunities in GE from Accountancy, Law and her own field of Human Resources.

This was another valuable experience, for some of our younger players who had just joined the squad for the first time which is good looking ahead to future seasons.

Thi was for the launch of the Young Enterprise programme. Students showed considerable interest and have already devised business ideas for launching their own company with public liability insurance. This one-year project will give them insights into entrepreneurship and real-life challenges in setting up and running a business.

Amar talked through the key indicators for successful entry and what they are are based upon, these included  character, attitude and aptitude for learning, not grades! Diverse Future will prepare the students for their applications and interviews. Some of the companies included within this are Virgin group, Jellyfish, Omnicom Media Group, 2 Heads, Mazda and Jaguar Land Rover, this is just a few from a vast majority.

Our Year 12 students heard anecdotes about the artists he has worked with. These have included 'Usher', Notorious B.I.G.' and 'Alicia Keys. His greatest inspiration and collaboration was with Stevie Wonder. His current business model maximises the revenue potential and brand worth of clients in both music and sport. There followed a Q & A session in which Mervyn flipped the traditional Q & A by asking the questions!

During the day they were able to participate in STEAM workshops on pre-production and post-production of films. They also had the opportunity to write a piece for a new film which they edited and presented at the Sky studios cinema. It really was the best STEAM creative experience Wexham have undertaken.

They were able to explore cutting-edge science in action. Some of the highlights from the day included: watching liquid nitrogen being used to create liquid oxygen, speaking directly with scientists, and taking on a science-themed escape room challenge with a focus on SI (Le Système International d'Unités) units. 

]]> Tue, 17 Jun 2025 14:21:29 GMT https://www.wexhamschool.co.uk/news/?pid=3&nid=1&storyid=489 <![CDATA[ PWC DATA ANALYTICS DAY IN READING ]]> https://www.wexhamschool.co.uk/news/?pid=3&nid=1&storyid=487 On Thursday 15th May, the Year 12 students participated in this STEAM Data Analytics workshop at PwC in Reading. During the various workshops they learnt about Taxation (Income tax, capital gains tax and state/ workplace pension options); interview skills and how to build a personal brand. With PwC being one of the largest recruiters of school-leavers, undergraduates and graduates - the last session covered the application process for routes into PWC-ATT and ACA apprenticeship and graduate training programmes, followed by a tour of the Tax and Auditing departments.  This was a motivational experience for aspiring students looking to move into accounting careers.

Students created a Solar-powered drone that featured sensors to scan and analyse soil, greenhouse gases, areas likely to be prone to drought and wildlife depletion, thus promoting sustainability in the atmosphere.

They played a really strong and tactical game, defeating Langley Grammar 2-1, having previously defeated Dedworth Middle School and Burnham Grammar in earlier rounds. This took them through to the Cup Final being played at Arbour Park Stadium on Thursday 8th May against St Edwards. Once again, they showcased their skills and talent working together, showing that all their training and resilience had paid off when they were crowned 2025 Slough Cup Champions.  A huge accomplishment and a day to remember for our students.

This transformative experience broadened their horizons and deepened their understanding of the world. We're grateful for everyone who made this journey possible and look forward to future partnerships. This  was a valuable learning experience for students.

The students demonstrated great enthusiasm and were actively involved in hands-on activities, showcasing teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Their energy and eagerness were evident throughout the session, and they are already looking forward to the next opportunity to further their learning and innovation. This session was a fantastic start to their Industrial Cadet journey!

Throughout the session, Tom Kerridge shared insights on building a business, connections and the hard work alongside the dedication required to be successful.

Bonnie-Sue answered some excellent questions submitted by our students, and shared some exclusive news with us about her latest book which is currently with her editor ahead of publication.

These workshops were focused on engineering. They worked on designing and building robotic vehicles. These mini-robots were then re-configured so that they could be used as essential tools in a diaster relief scenario. There were also creative challenges, vocational advice and teamwork.

Maximize your Potential work with schools up and down the country with the aim of equipping students with the necessary skills to boost their performance in examinations. From sharing tips to pick up extra marks, to providing vital memory retrieval strategies, the session helped to give our Year 11's a much clearer understanding of how to prepare themselves for the GCSE examinations in the Summer, as well as their PPE mock exams next month.

  • I wish I could watch it all over again 
  • it was amazing! I loved the costumes, and the prosthetic makeup used for some of the characters! 
  • It was wonderful and the first time I had ever seen a theatre show on a stage! I would highly recommend it!

This was an introduction to Fencing which allowed the students to try a sport beyond the curriculum. The students found this to be a great experience and they enjoyed learning a new sport.

This was focused on career pathways and vocations. There were a number of opportunities being presented to our STEM students in banking and finance with both Rothschild & Co & J.P. Morgan. These include both internships and being part of their Summer work experience programme, in addition to degrees and degree apprenticeships from the LSE and Macquaire. These were exclusive to our STEM students, with Wexham being guaranteed 5 places on these programmes.

The students learnt about vocations and career prospects in STEM. This included apprenticeships, areas of work and research, resilience from personal life struggles and vocational journeys of the speakers.

This was led by coaches from the Berkshire Cricket Foundation. This was a good enrichment experience.

This helped them gain an understanding about supporting roles/careers related to a professional club, and ask questions. This has given them an insight into potential career paths and the responsibility.

The day included trying out the horse race simulator, how to care for and handle a horse, a riding lesson, finishing the day with a mini tour of the racecourse.  

The day was a huge success and gave the students some ideas about options post-16.

They were able to prepare for this in the Olympic Gym. This was then followed by a session on the water to apply what they had been learning. Our students had a great day gaining an insight into rowing.

There was a wide range of STEM activities which focused on Energy, Transport, Health & Wellbeing, Technology & Innovation and the Environment & Sustainability. The event also featured a vast array of companies which included Jaguar Land Rover, The National Grid, Rolls-Royce, JCB and the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

The day was designed to spark their curiosity and enhance their understanding of STEM subjects. The day featured a variety of projects, such as engineering chocolate bridges, developing model cars, and the aeronautics of planes and helicopters.  The students gained practical insights into the real-world applications of STEM concepts and developed a deeper appreciation for science and engineering.

Over the past few months, they participated in a series of university-style tutorials on masculinity and male characters within creative writing and literature, and then had the opportunity to write a short story based on a character they developed. This was then published in book form and presented to the boys at the ceremony. It was a really beneficial day for the boys. Not only did they see their work published and have this celebrated at the university, they also had a tour of the university and participated in a lively Q&A session about university life.

This was organised to coincide with them winning the Oliver Twist Diorama Competition. The students were really engaged throughout the day, and found the whole experience interesting and inspirational. They asked lots of interesting questions, and gained lots of knowledge.
