Team and Facilities
The department is a thriving part of the school community and currently has four members of staff offering Business Studies, IT and Computer Science. We have a Leader of Department, a Subject Leader of Computing and ICT and a further specialist teacher in each subject.
We are situated in the Sixth Form Block. All teaching takes place in five classrooms which all have computer suites (over 120 computer terminals) with interactive electronic whiteboards. Three of the five classrooms are dedicated to Computer Science and IT and are equipped with the latest software to enable implementation of the curriculum. The other 2 classrooms are Business Studies rooms, which also come with computer suites. Every student is provided with hard disk storage space on the school intranet. An extensive range of resources for all three subjects has been built up within the Department.
KEY STAGE 3
The Key Stage 3 curriculum for Computing follows National Curriculum guidelines and aims to ensure that all students:
- Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computational thinking and computer science.
- Can analyse problems in computational terms and have practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
- Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
- Gain a sound understanding of E-Safety and the use of virtual learning platforms.
Examples of subject specific content that pupils will be taught include:
- Coding through Kodu
- Simple programming using Python
- Small basic
- Spreadsheet modelling
- Photoshop and App Development
- Core ICT competency in Microsoft Office suite
KEY STAGE 4 – Computer Science or ICT
Students can choose either Computer Science or ICT at KS4, as part of their option choices, although some restrictions are in place on which students can opt for Computer Science. If they choose one of these subjects they will continue to develop the skills and knowledge gained at KS3. Students will be prepared for progression onto appropriate KS5 course options.
KEY STAGE 4 – Business Studies
Students can choose GCSE Business Studies as part of their option choices. Whilst this is a new course for students, having not studies it at KS3, it remains popular with students as they learn how to plan, manage and understand the ways in which business organisations are run. Students will be prepared for progression onto appropriate KS5 course options.
KEY STAGE 5
At present we do not offer Computer Science at KS5 but we are exploring the possibility of enhancing our curriculum for September 2022.
The study of ICT at KS5 provides an insight into the significance and relevance of computers, applications and communications in the work environment and everyday life. Students gain a range of skills that are transferrable to the work place and relevant for everyday life.
This course is equivalent to one A Level qualification and can be completed in conjunction with 2 other Level 3 subjects offered in the school.
At this stage, Business Studies gives students the opportunity to gain a sound understanding of many business theories and concepts and how these are applied in everyday management of business and their effect on society. Students gain a critical understanding of organisations and the markets they serve. They also gain a range of transferrable skills, including decision making in the light of business information. Students will also develop the ability to interpret data presented in written and numerical forms, from which they will draw conclusions.
